The output stage
This is one of the most important areas in a CD player but it's expensive to implement correctly so manufacturers tend to cut costs here. They install integrated-circuit op-amps, which can sound quite good, but do not come close to offering the natural, full-bodied sound quality of a discrete filter and amplifier.
The Sercal Discrete 1 features 1% tolerance surface-mount parts to maximise filter performance and minimise trace pick-up. To this end the printed circuit board used is an expensive double-sided type, featuring a carefully optimised parts layout. Different parts were compared in the circuit and those chosen were the best sounding available.

The filter stage used in the discrete output for the Marantz CD63 CD67 is a design by Ray @ Ray Electronics.
Many thanks Ray.
